A trip to Maligne Lake should be right on top of your list of things to do on your Canada holiday, especially when you visit Jasper. Roughly a 50-minute drive from Jasper town, you can book a guided interpretive drive up Maligne Valley, which includes an amazing cruise around the legendary Spirit Island, possibly one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. Maligne Lake Cruises take roughly 2 hours and start around the end of May or early June, depending on when the lake thaws, and continue till the first week of October.
Surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range, Maligne Lake is one of the most famous places to visit in Canada and a rare geological formation, which makes it particularly significant to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. They believe that the mountains are a physical representation of their ancestors. You can’t set foot on Spirit Island because it’s considered a sacred place and Parks Canada does not allow private motorized boats on Maligne Lake. So, the only way to see the place is to either take a Maligne Lake cruise in the comfort of glass-enclosed and heated cruise boats or rent your own boar or canoe. When planning your Canada tour, however, remember that rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so visit the boathouse in the morning or late in the afternoon or book your cruise in advance as availability is limited.
