Algonquin Provincial Park and Georgian Bay

This itinerary starts off with 2 nights at Algonquin to allow enough time to explore the park on foot and by canoe. After this, you will travel along the shores of Georgian Bay and onto Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world!

Driving Distance – 100 KM
Pick up your RV in Cookstown in the morning and travel north to the city of Barrie. At the heart of the city, Barrie’s waterfront is a major attraction for residents and tourists. Spanning more than 5 km, the waterfront is yours to experience! After departing Barrie, continue on Highway 11 to Gravenhurst. Gravenhurst is known as the Gateway to the Muskoka region.

With sparkling lakes, clear rivers and more than 4,000 square kilometres of pine trees, the Muskoka region offers a beautiful landscape. Further north on Highway 11 you will enter the Frank McDougall Parkway (Highway 60). 

Visit the Visitor Centre at the park’s West Gate for assistance planning your leisure day tomorrow. Spend the following two nights at Algonquin Park.    

With sparkling lakes, clear rivers and more than 4,000 square kilometres of pine trees, the Muskoka region offers a beautiful landscape. Further north on Highway 11 you will enter the Frank McDougall Parkway (Highway 60).

Driving Distance – 200 KM  
Free day to enjoy the park. Option to go on a guided canoe tour, or to hike the Track & Tower trail or one of the other many hiking trails in the park.  

The park’s many trails include the Whiskey Rapids Trail, along the Oxtongue River, and the Barron Canyon Trail, with views from the north rim.

Driving Distance – 150 KM
Depart Algonquin Provincial Park via the West gate. Consider stopping at the Hardwood Lookout trail near the West Gate on your way out of the park.

Continue further west to Parry Sound. This town hugs the shores of the world’s largest freshwater archipelago, known as the 30,000 Islands. The area boasts several Provincial Parks, many beautiful beaches and countless hiking trails.

Driving Distance – 100 KM
Travel north on Highway 69 to make your way from Parry Sound to the French River. The French River flows for 105 km from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay, offering breathtaking scenery.

The French River Visitor Centre tells the stories of this historic waterway in the “Voices of the River” exhibit hall. Various interpretive panels, displays and interactive exhibits take the visitor along the length of the river and through time. Themes include the First Peoples, the Explorers, French Fur Traders and Missionaries, the Canadian Fur Trade, and the French River Today.

From the Visitor Centre, you can opt to hike the Recollet Falls trail. This trail begins at the Visitor Centre and follows the edge of the French River Gorge and ends at the historic Recollet Falls. The short portage around the falls has been walked by generations of First Nations, famous explorers, hardy Voyageurs, fur traders and missionaries.

Driving Distance – 100 KM
This iconic 645 square kilometres wilderness landscape showcases the wild Georgian Bay Coast of pink granite the La Cloche Mountains’ white quartzite ridges and over 50 exceptionally clear, sapphire lakes set among Jack Pine hills.

Explore the historic Village of Killarney, founded in 1820 as a fur trading post on Georgian Bay, and home of the famous Herbert Fisheries fish and chips.

Driving Distance – 275 KM
Depart Killarney in the morning and travel to Manitoulin Island via the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 6. Manitoulin Island is the heart and spirit of the Canadian Great Lakes and the largest freshwater island in the world!

The ‘Little Current Swing Bridge’ on Highway 6 forms the only land access to the island.  Approximately 18 km west of Little Current at the junction of Hwy. 540 and Bidwell Rd. is the famous Cup and Saucer Trail.

This is one of the most popular trails in Ontario and a great way to spend the afternoon!

Driving Distance - 275 KM
Today the entire day will be spent exploring Manitoulin Island. Visit the Mississagi Lighthouse and the surrounding trails in Meldrum Bay offer beautiful views of the rockfaces and Lake Huron.

It is recommended to spend the night at one of the campsites close to the ferry terminal for tomorrow’s ferry ride.

Driving Distance - 125 KM
In the morning travel by ferry from South Baymouth to Tobermory.  

Relax in a comfy Muskoka chai while enjoying the best views to be found anywhere on Georgian Bay. A ferry reservation is required for this route, book in advance! Near the town of Tobermory dramatic cliffs rise from the turquoise waters of Georgian Bay.

Another nearby destination is the Grotto, a scenic cave containing a pool of blue water. Parking at the Grotto is limited but can be booked in advance on the Parks Canada website. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the many points of interest on the Bruce Peninsula.

Depart your campsite in the morning and return your RV to the rental depot in Cookstown by 11:30 am.

  • Travel Insurance.  recommended.  We require Tour Operator/Travel Agent to secure a signed Waiver in the event client declines your offer to sell Travel Insurance.  DMCi will require Travel Agent to provide us the signed waiver when required as a part of the Terms & Conditions of Contract.
